Tesla Cybertruck Inventory Skyrockets to Record High

Tesla’s Cybertruck rollout is starting to look more like a pile-up. As of May, inventory levels for the edgy electric truck have exploded past 10,000 units in the U.S.—a record high that signals serious demand trouble. That’s a massive jump from just 2,400 units in Q1, and it doesn’t help that many of those trucks were built months ago, some even dating back to Tesla’s discontinued “Foundation Series” from 2024.

Sticker Shock and Sales Fatigue

At an average price tag of $78,000, Tesla could be sitting on nearly $800 million in unsold Cybertrucks. To move inventory, the company has resorted to steep and scattered discounts, which have had the unintended effect of flooding online listings. The result? Potential buyers now expect more price cuts, further freezing demand—and cratering resale value in the process. Meanwhile, the newly launched rear-wheel-drive version has fewer features and no cost savings, suggesting Tesla has scaled back its ambitions for the truck altogether.

Production in Limbo, Demand in Doubt

Tesla seems to be easing off the production pedal, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if Cybertruck manufacturing is paused entirely. Based on the current sales pace, these 10,000 units represent close to half a year’s worth of U.S. deliveries. That’s a far cry from the company’s original vision of cranking out 250,000 units annually. The Cybertruck's once-hyped entry into the EV scene is now at risk of becoming Tesla’s biggest commercial misfire.

The Tesla Hype Cycle Meets Reality

Cybertruck was supposed to be Tesla’s next cultural lightning rod—a futuristic status symbol with bulletproof windows and Blade Runner vibes. But the reality is proving much grimmer. The EV market has matured, consumer budgets are tighter, and the novelty factor alone isn’t enough to justify the price tag. What was once positioned as the next big thing is now an expensive problem sitting in lots across America.
